Chev unveils Cruze hatch in Geneva

Holden has been reluctant to tell much about the hatch version of the Cruze small car that is headed for production at the company's Elizabeth plant in South Australia. Indeed, reluctance is an outright understatement, in connection with the hatchback offering in the local range. No surprise there, since the five-door Cruze won't go into production until late this year.

But GM's international brand, Chevrolet, introduced its own production version of the Cruze hatch at the Geneva motor show this week, providing some evidence for how the Holden Cruze hatch will look when it finally enters the public domain.

The car you see in these pictures is the production Chevy on display in Geneva. Chevrolet won't launch the car officially until the middle of this year, which means it will reach European consumers sooner than the local version will hit Aussie showrooms. In the meantime, Chevrolet has placed its version of the car under the limelight with all the requisite fanfare.

According to the press material provided by Chevrolet the Cruze hatch will yield boot space close to 400 litres, which is class-leading for the small-car segment -- depending on how 'close' is close. The rear seat folds in a 60/40 ratio split to provide further luggage-carrying capacity.

Chevrolet hasn't gone hog wild with detailed information for the Cruze hatch -- that will have to wait for the car's launch proper -- but the company is satisfied that the hatch shares the sedan's overall dynamic ability and crash safety (five-star NCAP for the four-door model).

Compared with the Paris concept car, the production Chevy features a few details to make it road legal. There's a reversing light in the rear bumper cover on the right-hand side, with an integrated reflector, plus a complementary wider reflector on the left. The wheels look smaller in diameter than the concept car's. No surprise there...

At the front, the production model features different headlight clusters (the concept car's headlight clusters feature projector-beam units) and the LED running lights in the flanking intakes of the front airdam have given way to conventional fog lights in the production car. The lower grille (under the registration plate) has added slats laid over the mesh insert.

In all, it seems that the Cruze hatch won't be too far removed from the concept at all. And most of the changes are 'hang-ons'. It's by no means certain that the Holden hatch will wear the same frontal styling as the sedan's, but we reckon it's a better than even chance.

BMW's history is littered with roadsters, from the pre-war 328 and the beautiful 507, to the futuristic Z1 and the more recent Z3 and Z4 models. So it’s perhaps no wonder that the Bavarians are using the body style to give us a glimpse of its possible future in terms of technology and style.
The Vision ConnectedDrive occupies a place on BMW’s stand at the Geneva auto show. The two-door roadster’s "layered" appearance evokes the EfficientDynamics concept from 2009, while its asymmetrical layout brings back memories of 2001’s X Coupe concept. Just as the former previewed a wild, forthcoming production car and the latter ushered in the Bangle design era, the Vision ConnectedDrive provides a glimpse of BMWs to come.
Layered, Like an Onion
But rather than having a single plane of smooth sheetmetal or plastic covering up the functional elements of the vehicle, the concept employs different layers of material. The broken-up structures partially reveal the technology hidden underneath, and what you see changes significantly with every angle. The doors, inspired by the Z1’s, slide into the body, and the car can be driven with the doors tucked away.
The layered surfaces are enhanced with fiber-optic lighting effects that highlight the different functions and sections of the car. We’re not sure yet if we like it, but we appreciate the hard work: it certainly isn't possible to design a car like this with just a few pen strokes. And it is a remarkable and potentially trend-setting approach that is every bit as daring as the one taken by BMW design ten years ago with the X Coupe.
The windshield acts as the medium for a three-dimensional head-up display, and additional information is shown on the monitor behind the steering wheel. Tellingly, the layer that displays relevant driving information is christened the "safety layer," and it is fed by plenty of watchful sensors.
A larger zone that also encompasses the passengers is called the "infotainment layer," and it offers movies, music, and internet access. Passengers also get their own display with nav and music info, which can then be sent to the driver’s attention at the press of a finger.
The third layer is the entire vehicle, and falls under the touchy-feely term "comfort layer." It includes car-to-car and car-to-infrastructure communications; we hope the latter excludes car-to-cop shout-outs.
But underneath the layering, the concept seems fairly normal. It’s a traditional roadster, with a long hood, front wheels pushed far toward the corners, and an angry-looking front end that hews closely to BMW's current corporate look.
All-Seeing Future Tech
BMW is showcasing a bunch of new technologies in Geneva. They include connectivity with your smart phone, an AmEx Centurion–like concierge service, and automated self-parking. There also is an "emotional browser" that can, for example, download the music playlist of a café you’re passing, or provide architectural information on the surrounding buildings. It also includes an online purchasing function, so you can immediately buy what you see.
But the tech also highlights safety, of course. In the ConnectedDrive concept, sensors in the head- and taillights constantly scan the vehicle's surroundings, and a perceived danger is not only highlighted but also augmented with suggestions for evasive action.
BMW, by the way, doesn't say anything about the ConnectedDrive’s powertrain. Could it be BMW’s naturally aspirated inline-six, the traditional engine for the company’s roadsters? We somehow doubt it. And in all honesty, with this concept monitoring and second-guessing your driving, we’re not quite sure whether the statement that "the engineers of the BMW Group are working incessantly to turn this into reality for series-production vehicles" should be classified as a promise or a threat.

2012 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback - Auto Shows

At last fall’s Paris auto show, Chevrolet showed a five-door “concept” version of its new Cruze small car. Really, the only conceptual elements were minor things like blue-bordered headlights, LED accent strips, and blue-anodized brake calipers. It was clear the car was headed for production, and now the Cruze hatchback you’ll be able to buy (well, maybe not you, but other people; see below) is making its debut at the 2011 Geneva auto show.
To no one’s surprise, the five-door looks exactly like a Cruze sedan with a rounded-off rear. Like the concept, this car still reminds us of the Subaru Impreza hatch, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. (Unless you’re a Porsche.)
It’s probably safe to assume you’re reading this story because you love hatches as much as we do, but if you want this car, we hope you’re on the right side of the Atlantic. The Cruze hatch will be sold only in the five-door-friendly European market, starting this summer.
It will be offered with a standard six-speed manual transmission and a range of engine options that includes a top-spec 161-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel borrowed from the new Chevy Orlando, a small five-door MPV we don’t get. It’s unlikely GM will reverse course and bring this Cruze variant here, but if you want a similarly sized five-door from a domestic company, Ford is certainly willing to sell you a Focus

Automotive product planners, like nuclear researchers, adhere to a sacred code: Anything that can be split must be split. Nuclear researchers focus their attention on dividing atoms; product planners, on the gaps between existing models. Aston Martin’s staffers are devout practitioners of this religion, and that’s why the company is introducing the Virage, which will split the difference between the basic DB9 and the hard-core DBS.
The Virage is Quicker than a DB9 . . .
The aim with the Virage, Aston explains, is to replicate the Rapide’s driving experience in a two-door package, whether that’s in coupe or convertible form. In other words, the Virage is meant to offer more power and more refinement than buyers would get from a standard DB9, but without the brutality of the DBS. To that end, the Virage sports a 5.9-liter V-12 like those cars, but the engine’s 490 hp—prepare for a surprise—sites the new car perfectly between the 470-hp DB9 and the 510-hp DBS. Torque output for the V-12 is the same as the DBS’s, at 420 lb-ft. Aston says that the Virage will sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds; based on our experiences testing the car’s bookends, figure on a real-world 0-to-60-mph time in the low fours.
Beyond the engine bay, the Virage’s spec sheet will be familiar to Aston Martin aficionados. The sole gearbox is the same ZF-designed six-speed automatic transaxle also found in the DB9, DBS, and Rapide. Similarly, the Virage gets a new iteration of Aston’s adaptive damping system that now offers ten stiffness settings—five in Sport mode and five in Normal mode.
For times when the gentleman driver wants to gentlemanhandle the car through back roads, the Virage features a dash-mounted Sport button that sharpens the throttle response, speeds up gearchanges, and prevents the transmission from automatically upshifting at redline. (This button is separate from the adaptive-suspension settings.) For stopping, the Virage gets standard carbon-ceramic brakes, and their strength will be especially useful in halting the car from its claimed 186-mph top speed.
. . . And Looks It, Too
The performance enhancements may persuade drivers that the car merits their extra cash over a DB9, but what about impressing valets and other bystanders? Aston’s design team has them covered. The Virage’s front end has been massaged from its humble DB9 origins, with new, sharper headlights reminiscent of the Ferrari 458 Italia’s, featuring a strip of oh-so-fashionable LEDs. Diodes are also integrated into the fender vent, where they serve as side indicators. The aluminum grille is touted as being inspired by that of Aston’s oil-sheik-special One-77—it doesn’t look much different from a DB9’s to us—and the lower part of the front fascia has been reshaped. It now features a blacked-out, trapezoidal lower air intake and flanged corners that flow into restyled rocker panels. There’s more than a hint of One-77 in the styling here, but casual onlookers are still going to see a lot of DB9.
Inside, the Virage is trimmed as opulently as any trillionaire buyer would demand, slathered with seven leather hides provided by Bridge of Weir, a brand that sounds so haute, we got charged five bucks just to write it. A 2+0 configuration is available by order on coupes, meaning the Virage’s rear compartment can be spec’d as a leather-trimmed parcel shelf. This is in lieu of the fixed-roof car’s standard 2+2 layout, which features a leather-trimmed parcel shelf with two seatbelts.
Aston’s latest grand tourer will cost an estimated $210,000 in coupe form, with the convertible Virage Volante commanding an undisclosed premium. We should note that while the horsepower numbers slide between those of the DB9 and DBS just perfectly, the Virage costs just (just!) $20,000 more than a DB9, but a shocking $55,000 less than a DBS. We can’t imagine Aston’s niche-splitting product planners will let this gaping hole go unfilled for too long—after all, it leaves room for a Virage S.

2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 - First Drive

Jim Farley, Ford’s group V-P of global marketing, sales, and service, didn’t have to fly to California for the debut of the Mustang Boss 302. No one told him to. “It’s just that I’ve been driving my own Mustang right through the last two Michigan winters thinking about this project,” he said. “From a business standpoint, the Boss 302 shouldn’t have happened. But it happened. My dream for the car was that it would make a lot of money for a guy street racing. It should be a car that winds up on YouTube doing something illegal. I’ve been waiting 20-plus years to launch a car like this.”
The decision to resurrect the Boss 302 was made in the darkest days of the recession. Is Ford brave or what? Especially since it’s so rare that offspring are able to match the feats of legendary forebears, as Charlie Sheen can attest.
To eke out of the Mustang GT’s 5.0-liter V-8 a bonus 32 horses, Ford created a new intake manifold with runners resembling velocity stacks. Different cylinder heads were deployed—stronger alloy and altered ports—with each head undergoing 2.5 hours of CNC massaging. The bearings are race-spec, and the baffled pan holds 8.5 quarts of synthetic oil.
The result is 444 hp at 7500 rpm, a happy medium between the Mustang GT’s 412 hp and the Shelby GT500’s 550 hp. The Boss’s V-8—unlike the brutish Shelby’s—doesn’t so often overwhelm its chassis. In fact, what you first notice—and this is very BMW-ish—is that the Boss’s engine, driveline, and suspension draw virtually no attention to each other’s eccentricities. It lends the package a gratifying sense of unity that inspires confidence.
This V-8 is so vigorous and charismatic that it ought to be carved on Mount Rushmore. The engine revs nearly as quickly as you can flex your right foot, feeling as if it were displacing maybe three liters. What’s more, despite all that cam, it idles as smoothly as a Camry.
Sans traction control, launching the Boss takes some practice, although never has practice been so fun. Side-step the clutch with too many revs and you’ll trigger axle tramp followed by a cumulus cloud of Pirelli particulates that will only swell in size all the way through second gear. The trick is to slip the clutch from around 3500 rpm and then mat the throttle when the axle says, “Yeah, I’m feelin’ settled and relaxed back here.” The result is 60 mph in what we estimate to be the mid-fours, which would put the Boss right on the heels of the jackhammer GT500. And once that live axle is placated…well, the Boss doesn’t feel as if it would lose an inch to its Shelby sibling. The accelerative kick flings sunglasses and coins and pens in the center bin backward against a plastic wall, sounding as if they’d just hit the bottom of a ventilator shaft.
This is accompanied by a mellifluous resonance-free exhaust note that is an unlikely aural congruence of, say, Lexus IS F and Roush/Yates Sprint Cup engine. It’s a four-way exhaust—two sewer pipes astern and one per side, exiting just in front of the rear wheels. A restrictor plate in each side pipe lends the Boss federal pass-by legality, but the baffles can be unbolted in less time than it takes to read this review. It’s lucky that the rumble is so rich, because the engine is seriously loud at idle.
The Boss’s suspension has likewise benefited from a lavish labor of love. Compared with the GT, it boasts higher-rate springs, a fatter rear bar, new bushings, and 19-inch Pirelli P Zeros that, at the rear, are mounted on 9.5-inch-wide wheels. What’s more, each shock offers five settings that are adjustable via screwdriver, creating the possibility of very strange chassis behavior at the hands of very strange owners. Again, is Ford brave or what? And experimenting with dampers is educational and fun and will make you feel like Parnelli Jones’s crew chief.
The steering rack is electrically power-assisted and can be toggled to comfort, standard, and sport modes. We preferred standard, even at the track. The other settings felt as if they did nothing more than alter effort. No matter. The steering was ever accurate, progressive, and informative, with peerless interstate tracking.
At the front, four-pot Brembos clamp onto 14.0-inch vented rotors. The pads are near-race-spec compounds, although they don’t squeal, and the brake lines have been hardened to prevent expansion. On the road, pedal feel proved sublime—fairly hard but bang-on linear—and it was a cinch to modulate braking right on the threshold of ABS. Fade? None that we encountered during nine-tenths lapping around Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
As a dance partner in the hills, the Boss eagerly goes all bossa nova, laying down its prodigious power with surprising smoothness. The chassis felt remarkably balanced, usually neutral, leaning toward power oversteer only in the tightest turns. Despite its super-quick transient responses, it never felt nervous. This Mustang is so agile, so responsive to delicate inputs, that it makes the GT500 feel like a FedEx truck. The Boss’s grip almost always exceeds the driver’s courage. What’s more, the ultra-short-throw shifter was an ally, although its gates are so close that a clumsy upshift from second will sometimes collect fifth.
Ford has forever treated its Mustangs as blue-collar contrivances of unprepossessing heritage. The cockpit thus remains dour and rudimentary, despite the Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel and faux machine-turned aluminum trim. The acres of coarse pebbled-plastic surfaces, in particular, would be (and have been) rejected in far less expensive machines, notably in Ford’s own Focus. The gaping void between the top of the rear tires and the rolled fender lips is an eyesore. The steering column doesn’t telescope. And the brake and accelerator pedals should be closer.
The base Boss fetches $40,995; major options include a Torsen differential and Recaro seats (together costing $1995), plus the so-called TracKey software. If you’re headed for the track—and why wouldn’t you be?—then all are mandatory. In total, 4000 examples will be assembled, which isn’t even half of the original Boss 302’s two-year production. That sum includes 3250 base Bosses and 750 Laguna editions.

We expected the Boss 302 to be little more than a marketing exercise in nostalgia, a somewhat more brutal, slightly faster GT, with alluring graphics but primitive predilections. It isn’t. Nose to tail, this feels like a whole new equine, thoroughly sorted, conscientiously massaged, the object of considerable forethought and ambition. As automotive resurrections go, this is a knockout that venerates the original Boss while embarrassing it objectively and subjectively in every meaningful measure. What this is, is the best Mustang ever.
