Ferrari Four or Fantastic Fun? Ferrari FF Configurator Launched Online

Tuesday 15 March 2011

Can’t get enough of Ferrari’s new FF shooting brake? The Italian automaker has flipped the switch on its online Configurator for the V-12-powered flagship.
Pricing may not be listed (although, if you have to ask, you probably can’t afford it), but the extensive rainbow of color schemes and options lists are at your fingertips. As per the norm for Ferrari, there are over 30 exterior colors offered for the FF, a number of them inspired by the automaker’s color palette from the 1950s and 60s, yet buyers will also be able to special order their own colors as well. There are four different wheel options (includingfive-spoke and two ten-spoke patterns) and brake calipers can be painted in your choice of black, white, yellow, gray, and two shades of red. Options include a sport exhaust system, front and rear cameras, and chrome brightwork.

There are 15 interior colors available, which can be mixed and matched in either one- or two-tone combinations using either leather or alcantara. Seat designs for all four places can be trimmed in in diamond-patterned quilted leather or alcantara, or Daytona-styled seats with horizontal, perforated inserts. The seats can be vented, and seatbelts come in a choice of six primary colors. Upper and lower dashboards, headliner, contrast stitching, cabin upholstery, front and rear carpets, the steering wheel, door panels, arm rests, and the parcel shelf can all be customized from the same 15 color choices as the seats. The large, central tachometer comes in your choice of black, red, yellow, white, and silver. To add more sport inside the FF, opt for the various carbon fiber trim accents and carbon fiber steering wheel with shift lights.
Ferrari also provides a comparison feature allowing you to compare two different exteriors side-by-side, so be aware that embarking on a mission to configure an FF will probably deplete any productivity left in your day. Our problem? We can barely decide which exterior color to go with, let alone where to begin on the interior. How would you configure your FF? Let us know in the comments section below.

2011 Geneva Motor Show: 5 to Drive

Crossing the pond to attend an auto show in Europe is about as practical to most car fans as buying a two-seat supercar to ferry the kids to school. It just doesn’t happen. But if you could work a European auto show into your bucket list, the Geneva Motor Show would be a great place to start. Switzerland is always lovely whether you’re there in winter, spring, summer or fall. And the Geneva Motor Show always rolls out some exotically beautiful and completely unaffordable vehicles (at least for most of us).

Today we’re looking at five exotic or concept cars we’re adding to the must-drive mix. We’re talking about an Aston Martin, Ferrari and Lamborghini. Plus a concept car each from Nissan and VW. Everything from a two-seat supercar to a four-seat Ferrari to a return to the classic 1960s VW Microbus updated for the twenty-first century. If you can't drive these cars, at least you can dream.

2012 Saab 9-5 SportCombi Preview

The 2012 Saab 9-5 SportCombi is a car that almost never was. It was 2009, and Saab was a brand of General Motors. The huge American automaker was reeling from a depressed economy and in the midst of dropping its less-than-profitable brands — Saab was on the cutting block. Cars like the Saab 9-5 Sedan, and 9-5 SportCombi (station wagon), had been previewed at the major auto shows but were on the verge of arriving stillborn unless a proper suitor was found.

Enter Spyker Motors. In January of 2010 the small Swedish automaker declared it would be purchasing Saab. It was good news for all involved. Not only did the arrangement include an influx of capital (guaranteed by the Swedish government), but there was a legal agreement that General Motors would continue to supply engines, transmissions and vehicles to the new owners of Saab. After a slight delay, development work on the 9-5 Sedan and SportCombi variant continued. Today, the new 9-5 Sedan is on sale, soon to be joined by the 2012 Saab 9-5 SportCombi.

What's New for the 2012 Saab 9-5 SportCombi:

  • Marks the Return of the Big Saab Wagon: The arrival of the 9-5 SportCombi fills a gap in the automaker's lineup. Not only does it join the model range as a larger sibling to the 9-3 SportCombi, but it also becomes the largest vehicle on Saab's increasingly crowded showroom floor.
  • Built on Shared GM Platform: The Saab 9-5 SportCombi is built on a flexible platform shared with the Buick Regal, Buick LaCrosse and European Opel Insignia. The flexible platform allowed the designers to increase the size of the model, both inside and out. Compared to its predecessor, it is three inches wider and nearly seven inches longer, making it bigger than an Audi A6 Avant.
  • Impressive Cargo Capacity: While the 9-5 Sedan is roomy and affords plenty of storage capacity, the SportCombi trumps its sibling with a maximum 56 cubic feet of storage space (with the rear seats folded flat). The space shrinks to 18.6 cubic feet with the second row in use. A power-operated rear tailgate is optional.
  • One Engine, Turbocharged: While the Saab 9-5 Sedan is available with a choice of turbocharged four- or six-cylinder power, and front- or all-wheel drive, the Swedish automaker has simplified the North American SportCombi lineup with a standard turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder and all-wheel drive. Rated at 220 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, the turbocharged four sends power to all four wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission.
  • Features Mirror the Sedan: Like the Saab 9-5 Sedan, the SportCombi is expected to arrive with a full complement of power equipment and accessories. It will also be offered with adaptive chassis control, tri-zone air conditioning, adaptive cruise control, bi-xenon headlamps, head-up display and keyless ignition.
  • Priced Slightly Higher than the Sedan: Pricing information was not available as this article was written, but Saab's SportCombi models are generally priced about $1,000 higher than their sedan counterparts.

2012 Saab 9-3 Preview

It’s no secret that the car world has been the stage for a virtual bloodbath over the past few years; historic brands were shuttered with surprising speed and frequency. If not for Sweden’s Spyker, purveyor of high-end luxury sports cars, Saab would have been listed among the casualties. (In other news from the Geneva Auto Show, Spyker has been sold to a Russian billionaire so that Saab can move forward without distraction.)
But Saab survived. The all-new 2010 9-5 Aero introduced the world to the post-General Motors version of Saab, and the 9-4X is arriving soon as the company’s first credible entry into the luxury crossover SUV market. But what of Saab’s bread-and-butter model, the aging 9-3? Later this year dealers will offer an updated version of the Saab 9-3 for 2012.

Unfortunately, reports indicate that a wholly revamped 9-3 isn’t slated to hit the streets for another couple of years, so it’s up to the 2012 model’s minor upgrades and styling tweaks to woo shoppers who might otherwise opt for an Acura TL, Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Cadillac CTS, or any one of several fresher premium rides.

What’s New for the 2012 Saab 9-3:

  • Call Me Griffin: With the debut of the updated model comes a new name, the 2012 Saab 9-3 Griffin, Convertible, Sport Sedan, and SportCombi variants. For those who don’t know (like some of us here at Vehix), Griffin refers to the red half-hawk/half-lion creature pictured on the Saab logo, and represents vigilance. Frankly, why Saab would decide to go to the trouble and the expense of renaming a long-in-the-tooth model that’s been only mildly refreshed has us admittedly perplexed. Perhaps “Griffin” is the missing element that will have car buyers flocking to Saab dealers in droves.
  • Minor Exterior Design Updates: There’s not a great deal of visual differentiation between the 2012 Saab 9-3 and its predecessor. You could strain your eyes looking for changes that aren’t there, so let us give you the brief rundown. Up front is a face that’s had a bit of plastic surgery, with a new set of headlights, an updated grille, and standard fog lights. Overall, the look is meant to mimic that of the redesigned Saab 9-5. Filling the wheel wells are restyled alloys in 16-, 17-, or 18-inch sizes, the flanks host new badges, and sedans are now equipped with a standard rear spoiler.
  • Tweaked Interior Décor: Focus your attention on the 2012 Saab 9-3’s interior and you might notice a massaged dashboard as well as trim panels sporting graphite, titanium, or metallic finishes. Gray fabric is now available, in addition to Black or Tan leatherette.
  • More Muscle, Less Thirst: All 2012 Saab 9-3 Griffin variants feature either front- or all-wheel-drive capability and are fitted with a new, twin-scroll turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine boasting direct injection technology. Swiped from the new 9-5’s engine bay, the new turbocharged four-cylinder increases output from 210 to 220 horsepower while torque rises to 258 lb-ft from 221. Fuel economy has reportedly been improved by four percent, and the car is now E85-compatible. That’s not a monumental change, but a move in the right direction, especially in these days of ever-increasing gasoline prices. Gears swaps are handled by a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

Buy New Car Online

It is always interesting to find that people quite often ask about the buy new car online process and how much of the information is actually pertinent toward what usually amounts to being a great solution for customers and dealers alike.

There is in many cases a real precedence set for the dealer in the time saving factor of buying a car online due to the fact that another dealer in another region may have exactly what one of their customers happens to be looking for. This is an example of how this will benefit the customer and the dealers involved.

Waiting on an order from the auto manufacturer is often easier said than done. Due to backlogs and various hold ups in the manufacturing process or waiting for parts shipments the time frames often tend to begin to float on orders. One of the great benefits of working with other dealers is that when something is needed in one location and it is just sitting on a lot somewhere else the process can take place very quickly.
To ship an already manufactured new vehicle from the lot of one dealer to the lot of another dealer can be done very quickly. The use of various transportation companies who actually specialize in low volume vehicle shipments and can often be completed in just a few days in most instances.

We have learned over the years that when a business can provide the customer with exactly what they want then the business has achieved success and delivered by using the abilities at their disposal. The entire process can result in a smooth transaction and this is one of the prime examples of how the buy new car online process goes between dealers for the benefit of the customer.

For customers who actively shop online this crosses over to huge opportunities because not only are they no longer limited to what is available in their own local market but they are also not limited to the car prices which are established in their area either. This approach to nationwide pricing strategies allows consumers to find where the best deals are locally and regionally.

We find that the various local car markets around the nation have noticeable fluctuations in what new and used cars under value will bring price wise. It only makes sense that the consumer who is shopping online is aware of this fact and in our experience the transactions are actually quicker as in the case of not having to wait for a factory delivered options package for example.

The ease of which the new car network can be utilized creates some very impressive new opportunities for savvy shoppers and this has resulted in some fairly impressive price breaks as well. Dealers are going to be limited only to the resources in which they draw from and we have found that the added benefits of technology such as the Internet creates many additional opportunities.

With this technology the details such as pricing information and availability are immediate. The same is true for shipping details and basically anything that has to do with inventory as well. Digital pictures and portable document files with all of the highly detailed points of interest regarding the vehicles are never more than a quick email away. There are not too many businesses which sell goods and even services which are not in a position to really benefit from doing business online.

This includes everything from providing product data specifics to broadening the businesses customer base through online marketing and advertising campaigns which often allow the business to reach a much larger audience and get the word out about special offers and sales promotions.

Best New Car Values Small

Many people believe that the struggling auto industry as a whole has been facing issues which are firmly seated in consumer demand and this is true in many aspects. The economic climate has been an obvious cause of the dissolution of what had become almost an expectation in the seasonal volumes of traffic which most of the best new car dealers have come to rely on based on many decades worth of historical data.

Although now that things have since changed for some time now it appears that it is not only a matter of a lack of prospective buyers but it may just have something more to do with exactly what consumers really want.

Is there really some sort of a shift to a significant demand for more new economical small cars? This question as appropriate as it is at the moment has long since been on the table and the answer basically has always resulted in the fact that on the surface one could presume that the answer is yes. However when the sales of larger less fuel efficient vehicles are consistently performing so well, all things considered, then one must stop and continue wondering how this could still be.

Well times seem to change slowly when it comes to the new car industry and the ability to deliver what some say is in demand while others point to the actual sales numbers involved which result in the ever present conflicting information. As this has been the case for decades now are people really ready to give up their larger vehicles on a large scale or will things continue the way they have been for so many years.

One constant thread through all of this has been the fact that the cost of fuel can be a significant drain on one’s daily or monthly budget. There certainly is a growing demand for economical new cars under 15000 dollars like the Ford Focus for example and from our experience many of these vehicles have the benefits which seem to be at the top of prospective new car buyers lists. This ultimately includes passenger as well as cargo space in addition to affordability.

2010 Nissan Sentra Under 15000

The 2010 Nissan Sentra 2.0 manufacturer suggested retail price starts at $15,420 and consumers keeping on the lookout for some great incentives and rebates as well as special pricing sales events to bring the price of these new cars under $15,000 should likely not have far to go this time of year.

For example one of the notable transactions which occurred is a really great example of some good timing on the part of the consumer who shared some feedback with us regarding their purchase of a new 2009 Nissan
Sentra which they had their eye on after doing a decent amount of research on safe, fuel efficient sedans.

This was a new 2009 Nissan Sentra and the timing was great as far as the Cash for Clunkers incentive as well as the factory rebate and a dealership that was willing to make a year end type deal. This combination will simply fuel the interest of the prospective new car buyer and the savings are genuinely impressive.

At the time the rebate which Nissan was offering was $2,000 and with this applied plus the $4,500 Cash for Clunkers for the trade in and the dealer agreed to take an additional $620 off of the price. Ultimately bringing the drive away price to just over $13,000 including tax, title, and all other fees and this was by far the best deal they had found.

Up to this point they had done a quite a bit of shopping around the area and online as well. Basically nothing else even came close to this particular deal but it does pave the way to a different way of approaching the idea of the incentive as an effective sales tool as many dealerships take a closer look at this concept. Obviously this benefits the consumer because it means better deals. In combination with extremely low interest rates comparatively speaking the time to buy is when the incentives are being offered and usually they is done on limited time intervals.

Obviously influential prices like this do not happen everywhere but they are out there. Since the Cash for Clunkers incentive program through the government has long since ended there are quite a few small and large dealers out there who are making similar incentives part of their overall sales strategy. As we have mentioned before the prices and special incentives will be in favor of the buyer until there is consistent stabilization and growth in the economy.

Built around the 2.0 liter I4 DOHC 16V FI 140 horsepower 4 cylinder engine the Sentra comes with the option of a six speed manual transmission or the automatic transmission. The manual transmission receives a 2010 new car EPA rating of twenty six miles per gallon city and thirty four miles per gallon highway which fares quite well in fuel efficiency as far as the relative competition goes.

The Sentra in its various option packages provides well as a fuel efficient new car which delivers on safety appointments as well. Owners consistently mention how they look forward to driving their Sentra every chance they get. Overall the acceleration is full of pep and the braking performance gives an additional feel of sporty control. Just as a performance car handles the steering provides tight stable cornering.

Basics include air conditioning with in-cabin micro filter, power windows, power door locks, six standard air bags which include roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental air bags. The 2.0SL model offers the optional Rockford Fosgate eight speaker audio system which includes two subwoofers, two six by nines, and four two and a half inch mid range tweeters for the audio buffs.

2010 Toyota Avalon Luxury Car

ombining respectable fuel economy with an overall focus on comfort the 2010 Toyota Avalon provides a selection which includes three available trim options including the XL, XLS and Limited

We consistently find that many owners of the 2010 Avalon will comment on the overall quality of the ride which this new vehicle offers and the power which in conjunction with the 3.5 liter V6 engine results in dependable get up and go when necessary while remaining efficient in its fuel consumption.

The displacement double overhead cam design and the available 6-speed shift-able automatic transmission provide highly popular benefits to those looking for the combination found on the front wheel drive design.
With four wheel independent suspension along with front and rear stabilizer bar this design has long since proven to provide an exceptional experience when it comes to not only the luxury and comfort levels but the smoothness of the ride as well. The design incorporates the Macpherson strut rear suspension system which plays a role in the vehicles ability to give the occupants the sense that feeling even bumpy road conditions are kept to a minimum while driving at various speeds. As it is often the little details which make up the overall experience which a new vehicle provides and the Toyota Avalon is well received as a model which provides an excellent choice of features. For example the ability to plug in a GPS unit into the 12 volt connection on the center console is of a great convenience while traveling longer distances.

Of course on any luxury car the list of advanced features tends to cover the majority of individual preferences as well as overall driving scenarios however the Toyota Avalon seems to fall into a category consisting of fuel efficiency, notably high quality ride in various road conditions, interior space, overall power and of course affordability especially when compared to other luxury cars within this category.

Notable safety features on these luxury new cars under $30,000 are many and include configurations such as ventilated front disc and solid rear disc brakes with 4 wheel ABS emergency braking technology which provides a real focus on overall safety while driving. Dual front side mounted airbags, head airbags in both front and rear areas, passenger airbags with occupant sensing, child safety locks, child seat anchors and remote anti-theft alarm system. We also found that the engine immobilization system will provide additional benefits to the owner in the sense that it provides an additional layer of security which has the possibility of qualifying for a break on the owner’s car insurance expenses according to some agents. This type of feature is always at least worth mentioning to your car insurance agent in an effort to possibly reduce the cost of your premiums

2011 Kia Soul Under 15000

The 2011 Kia Soul may not have changed very much in the way it looks over last year’s model, yet this economical compact car does provide a relative amount of versatility in its class. Among the 2011 new cars under 15 000 in this class the Kia Soul does touch upon several important points which are requisite to many buyers.

These points have to do with economical ownership over the short and long term, and they have to do with cargo space and passenger room as well. The 2011 Kia Soul base model starts with a low MSRP of $13,300. This model even at the base delivers a sporty, affordable and economical solution for everyday driving in city or rural environments while reportedly remaining very close to the actual EPA ratings.
While there are other packages within the Soul model line which include four trims within the Plus and Sport models, it is the base model which manages to remain as one of the new cars for under $15,000 in 2011. The base model comes with a 1.6L I4 engine with 16 valves and 122 hp. This in combination with the five speed manual transmission with overdrive has an EPA rating of 26 miles per gallon city and 31 miles per gallon highway. The Sport has a slightly larger 2.0 liter I4 142 hp engine with a four speed automatic transmission. The EPA for the Sport is 24 MPG city and 30 MPG highway. The MSRP for the Sport is $18,495.

Several current owners of the Kia Soul we have spoken with have mentioned how they prefer its styling over the Scion, or the Cube which has a rather boxy type of look to it. The opinion is often that the Soul gives a bit more attention to stylish looks, like for instance some of the various Scion models which the Soul also competes with, and it does not look quite so boxy either. Most seem to agree though that these small cars can be fun to drive and are easy to handle in city driving conditions.

The 2011 Kia Soul is classified as a compact car which is actually quite similar to the 2010 model. The model itself is still fairly young as it was first introduced by Kia in 2008 and provides consumers with an opportunity to drive a small car with a slightly different look to it as mentioned previously as it is considered to be somewhat similar to the Nissan Cube in appearance.

With a history of receiving recognition and several awards for safety around the globe, the Kia Soul is actually considered to be one of the safest family cars on the market in some countries and it gets strong safety ratings in the United States as well.
These new cars are basically for drivers looking for a crossover vehicle since they are not luxury sedans and they are not sports cars either. These are also economical cars with an emphasis on pricing. Obviously new cars under 15 000 dollars can represent significant cost savings in their designs, so the frills are kept to a minimum including relatively basic interiors. The owners of the 2011 Kia Soul and previous year’s models frequently have the opinion that they are ultimately responsive and enjoyable cars to drive. There is also the ability to keep the rear seats down which can provide added handy cargo space when needed. With several trims and options available to satisfy consumers looking in this price range, the 2011 Kia Soul once again delivers a good choice in the economical compact new car category.

Intelligent Choices

With home values tanking, paychecks dwindling and employment tenuous, it's more important than ever to be smart when choosing a new car. Obviously, that means identifying what your needs are, conducting careful research — such as reading the latest reviews and news about the vehicles that meet those needs — and then haggling for the best price. It also means considering what that vehicle will actually cost you in the long run.
Luckily, IntelliChoice.com does most of the cost-of-ownership legwork for you. And it recently announced the winners of its annual Best Overall Value of the Year awards for 2011.

The awards are given to vehicles with the lowest cost of ownership over a 5-year period in 21 classes defined by size, body style and price. Vehicles are judged based on retail price as well as accumulated ownership costs of depreciation, maintenance, repairs, fuel, fees, financing and insurance.
For 2011, Toyota came out the big winner, collecting 11 prestigious BOVYs. Volvo, MINI and General Motors tied for a distant second place with two cars each. Infiniti, Subaru, Audi and Honda each collected one BOVY nod.
The Big Winner: Toyota
Toyota may have had a tough 2010 with a much publicized group of recalls and a sliding market share, but that didn't stop the automaker from topping 11 of the 20 BOVY classes. Toyota-branded vehicles captured wins in seven vehicle categories, while its luxury division Lexus took home four more.

The seven Toyota winners were the Prius in the passenger-car class; the Avalon in the premium passenger-car class; the RAV4 4-cylinder in the compact crossover/wagon class; the Sienna in the minivan class; the 4Runner in the SUV class; and the Tacoma in compact pickup and the Tundra in full-size pickup classes.

2011 Honda CR-Z — Review

The CR-Z intends to mate the seemingly incompatible worlds of hybrids and sports cars, but the result isn’t so much a white-hot revolution as a lukewarm try at bringing fun back to the Honda lineup.
Pros:
  • Decent power
  • Clever storage throughout the cabin
  • Tight chassis
Cons:
  • Large blind spots
  • In Eco mode, A/C isn’t up to fighting midday sun
  • Good but not great fuel economy with manual transmission

Honda has intentionally stirred up the ghosts of its once sporting past with the 2011 CR-Z by borrowing design cues from the long-extinct CR-X — a car that managed to be both fuel-efficient and fun to drive.
But while the CR-X developed a massive following that continues to this day, the CR-Z might end up being even more popular because it provides eco-conscious hybrid owners with something they've never had: style.

Model Lineup
Honda has split the CR-Z line into two trim levels: base and EX. The starter CR-Z is loaded with plenty of features we wouldn't have expected, given the car's projected price of approximately $20,000. These include keyless entry, power door locks and windows, and an AM/FM/CD/USB stereo system. Honda also equips all CR-Z trims with its stability-control system as standard equipment.

Buyers looking for a few more bells and whistles can move on up to CR-Z EX trim. Honda hasn't said how much the next level will cost, but we do know that buyers will be able to enjoy a more potent 7-speaker sound system, Bluetooth hands-free calling and a slick, perforated leather steering wheel. If you want Honda's familiar (but dated) navigation system, you'll need to stick with the EX trim level, but it will be an additional cost.
Under the Hood
When Honda announced it would bring a spiritual successor to the CR-X to life, fans of the brand immediately began salivating at the thought of a 200-plus-horsepower hatch with a snappy, naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine under the hood. No one was quite prepared for what Honda unveiled instead: a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder with the company's Integrated Motor Assist hybrid system. Combined, they produce 122 horsepower and 128 lb-ft of torque when bolted to the standard 6-speed manual transmission. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is also available, but in that configuration, the engine and motor produce only 123 lb-ft of torque.

Fuel economy for both versions is a little disappointing, considering the size of the CR-Z and the fact that the car is a 2-seater. When equipped with the 6-speed manual gearbox, the car manages just 31 mpg city/37 mpg highway. Those numbers climb significantly with the CVT, to 35 mpg/39 mpg. The figures are derived in Normal mode; the car is said to do slightly better in Eco mode and, you guessed it, worse in Sport.
And finally, in order to keep costs down, Honda decided to build the CR-Z with a nickel-metal hydride battery instead of a more advanced lithium-ion unit. Not a good move, in our opinion.
Inner Space
Honda has always had an excellent grasp of how to make the most out of a small space — just look at the deceptively roomy Fit — and the CR-Z benefits from that knowledge. Despite having a seemingly tiny back hatch area, the hybrid boasts a little more than 25 cubic feet of total cargo volume. Honda has even given thought to stashing valuable electronics out of sight by integrating what it calls a "rear cargo console" — basically an area for things such as laptops, cameras and any other high-dollar items that would typically catch a thief's eye. Similarly, the rear cargo cover can be manipulated in a handful of ways to help divide the cargo space as necessary for small or large items.

Both driver and passenger get treated to cloth sport seats with bolsters set wide enough apart to accommodate big-boned Americans of every variety. Even so, the buckets do a good job of keeping you in place should the going get curvy. The dash and instrument cluster are supposed to give the impression of an advanced technological design, which means there's plenty of plastic, both shiny and otherwise. The dash is asymmetrical with a bias toward the driver, and the instrument cluster features a large, easy-to-read gauge with the tachometer and speedometer information prominently displayed.
The CR-Z also uses a clever system to encourage "green" driving. A color-changing ring nestled behind the speedometer reacts based on your driving habits. Drive like a heathen and the ring will stay blue. Go a little easier on the throttle and brakes, and the ring will glow green. If the CR-Z is in Sport mode, the ring stays red no matter what you do behind the wheel.
On the Road
The CR-Z is capable of operating in three modes: Eco, Normal and Sport. The hybrid will vary things such as throttle response, shift points and power-steering assist depending on which you choose. Stick the car in Eco mode, and the CR-Z will prompt you to shift sooner when equipped with the 6-speed manual transmission, though throttle response falls off the face of the Earth and the steering goes from feeling somewhat taut to flopping around like a loose noodle. If it's a warm day (say, 77 degrees Fahrenheit and up), the diminished power of the air conditioning just isn't acceptable, either.

Fortunately, there are Normal and Sport modes to cure those ills. In either of those two options, the engine/motor combo actually feels up to the task of moving the 2,600 pound car around with decent quickness. We wouldn't call the car fast — Honda says the CR-Z will hit 60 mph in a dawdling 9.7 seconds — but the relatively lightweight design and rigid chassis help the car feel like it has a bit of spring in its step.
Even more surprising, the regenerative brakes on the CR-Z are linear and easy to modulate — something that's almost unheard of in hybrids. Combined with a decent weight distribution (60 percent front and 40 percent rear), the hybrid handles twists and turns with a decent flair, even given its torsion-bar rear suspension.

2011 Mercedes-Benz R-Class — Review

The 2011 R-Class is the most comfortable Mercedes for carrying six or seven passengers, especially if they are adults. It also has plenty of room for cargo, but the price is high and the gasoline engine is not fuel efficient. The diesel engine offers a useful mix of usable power and improved fuel economy; however, it, too, comes at a premium.
Pros:
  • Luxurious interior
  • Versatile space for passengers and cargo
  • Efficient diesel engine
Cons:
  • Costly
  • Poor fuel economy with gasoline engine
  • Not as versatile as a minivan

The Mercedes-Benz R-Class is a hard vehicle to classify. It has the size of an SUV, the looks of a minivan and the carlike unibody structure of a crossover. But it's not really any of them. It's roomier than your typical crossover, doesn't have sliding side doors like a minivan, and drives like a car, not a wonky SUV.
No matter how you categorize it, though, one fact remains the same: The R-Class has been the roomiest and most comfortable European-made people-mover since it was introduced to the public as a 2006 model year vehicle.
For 2011 Mercedes gave its impressive family hauler a face-lift. But don't worry, it didn't change anything else. The R-Class is still the poshest people-mover on the block.
Model Lineup

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz R-Class is offered in two trims, the R350 4MATIC and the R350 BlueTEC 4MATIC. Standard equipment in both iterations includes faux leather upholstery, a sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, power front seats, a 60/40 split-folding second-row seat, an AM/FM stereo with 6-disc CD changer, a universal garage door opener, self-leveling rear air suspension, automatic headlights and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Standard safety equipment consists of dual front airbags, front side airbags, side-curtain airbags for all three rows, a tire-pressure monitor, active front head restraints, rear park assist, anti-lock brakes with emergency brake assist, traction control and electronic stability control with trailer stabilization. The R-Class also comes with Mercedes' Pre-Safe system, which activates emergency brake assist to help avoid a potential accident and readies the airbags, seatbelts and even the sunroof for a crash.
Under the Hood
The R350 4MATIC is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, while the R350 BlueTEC has a turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel engine that makes 210 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. Both engines route their power through a 7-speed automatic transmission that can be shifted manually via a pair of steering-wheel paddles. Fuel economy is rated at 14 mpg city/19 mpg highway for the gasoline engine and 18 mpg/24 mpg for the diesel.
Both versions come standard with Mercedes' 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. In the R-Class, it is a full-time system that sends 45 percent of the power to the front wheels and 55 percent to the rear wheels at all times.

Inner Space
Inside, the R-Class is all about room and comfort. It can be configured to seat four, five, six or seven passengers. The second row can be ordered with a three-passenger bench seat that splits 60/40, or with a pair of bucket seats. A two-passenger third-row seat is optional. The second-row seats offer enough headroom and legroom for even tall passengers, though the middle seat isn't contoured for the best comfort. Many crossovers have useful second-row seats, but few offer a third row that is as comfortable as that in the R-Class. It has enough room to fit a pair of adults without complaint, although the short seat bottoms will limit long-trip comfort. Getting in and out is a breeze, except for the third row, of course.
The R-Class is also about cargo space. Both the second- and third-row seats fold flat to create a large, 85-cubic-foot cargo area — about as much as an Acura MDX or Land Rover LR4. Opening up all that space can be a bit complicated, though. When the second-row buckets and center console are ordered, the console must be removed and stored. Depending on how far back the front seats are set, the second-row headrests may need to be removed. When folded, the third-row seats also hook into the second-row seats, so the second row must be moved into the right position. It all takes about a minute to configure, which isn't that bad, but other crossovers have much easier folding procedures.

For those who want to carry both passengers and cargo, the R-Class has 42.2 cubic feet of cargo space when the third-row seats are folded, which is as much room as a small hatchback. Maxing out passenger capacity limits cargo space to 15.2 cubic feet, which is still as much as a good-size trunk.
Up front, the ambience is typical Mercedes, though a bit downscale from vehicles like the E-Class or S-Class. The standard upholstery is faux leather instead of real leather, but there is burl walnut trim, the new gauges have an attractive watch-face look, and the materials have a solid, soft-touch feel.

Mercedes' COMAND system operates the communications, navigation and entertainment functions. Unlike in other Mercedes cars, there is no central knob. Instead, there's a 5-way controller inconveniently located to the right of the navigation screen on the center stack. Using the COMAND system can be complicated, and reaching across the dashboard will grow tiresome for most drivers.
The R-Class also offers a bevy of entertainment features. An available hard-drive-based navigation system holds up to 4 gigabytes of music files; an iPod interface and SIRIUS Satellite Radio are available; an optional Harman Kardon 7.1 surround-system cranks the tunes; and back-seat occupants can be entertained by DVD screens in the backs of the front headrests. Many of these features are offered in the $4,000 Premium package.

On the Road
From behind the wheel, the 2011 Mercedes-Benz R-Class has the traits of a crossover. It drives like a car, with a stable and composed feel. It's not sporty, though, as there is some notable lean in turns and the large size means it needs some time to gather itself in quick changes of direction. Compared with the minivans that buyers may cross-shop it against, though, the R-Class is more composed and easier to maneuver.
In the Mercedes tradition, the ride is smooth, and only the sharpest ruts upset passenger comfort. Steering is light and a little slow but direct, and the brakes are predictable and easy to modulate.
The 3.5-liter gasoline engine provides ready but not excessive power from a stop. Zero to 60 mph arrives in 8 seconds. The engine works fairly well with the 7-speed automatic transmission; shifts are smooth, if a bit tardy when passing punch is needed. Unfortunately, fuel economy is poor. The gas engine's mileage numbers are more of what you'd expect from a V8, not a V6.

If you want better mileage, opt for the 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine. It provides even more willing power from a stop, but midrange and highway response aren't quite as brisk. Zero to 60 mph takes 8.6 seconds. Fuel economy is much higher. Given the savings at the pump, we'd opt for the diesel. Properly equipped, both engines can tow up to 3,000 pounds.

New for 2011 is Blind Spot Assist, which monitors the sides of the vehicle and warns drivers (via lights in the side mirrors) that vehicles are traveling in the blind spots. The system also sounds a warning if the driver signals for a lane change when a vehicle is traveling in that lane. The system works as advertised, but drivers should take care not to rely on it and should pay attention to the lights in the mirrors instead of tuning them out.

Japanese Automakers Shut Plants After 8.9 Quake

Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. suspended production at plants in Japan today and were assessing damage after an 8.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast, triggering a tsunami and shaking buildings as far away as Tokyo.

The shutdown could affect exports to the United States of such cars as the Toyota Yaris sedan, the Scion xB and Scion xD, as well as the Honda Fit small car, the Accord sedan and CR-V crossover. The temblor also hit production of the Acura and Infiniti lineups.

Toyota, the world's largest carmaker, said it evacuated workers from several factories in the quake zone. Toyota has two parts plants in northern Japan and it has two affiliates, Kanto Auto Works, Ltd. and Central Motors Co., that assemble small cars in the region.
The immediate status of those plants was still being evaluated, Toyota spokesman Dion Corbett said. "We are still trying to get information from them," he said.

At least one person died at Honda's r&d facility, and fires erupted at two Nissan plants.
Spotty phone coverage inside the quake zone made it difficult for the companies to get a clear picture of how extensive the damage was. Authorities in northern Japan were just beginning to sift through the region's wreckage and tally the death toll when darkness fell.

The quake struck at 2:46 p.m. local time off the coast of Sendai, north of the capital, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The tremor also triggered a tsunami that flooded coastal areas. Television footage showed cars being washed down flood zones like toys and large capsized cargo ships tossed sideways and jumbled together and pushed inland.

The main airport in Sendai was transformed into an island surrounded by flood plains.
Aftershocks, many strong, rocked the region for hours afterward.
Toyota is one of the few Japanese automakers with a large manufacturing presence in northern Japan, a region it wants to make a center for small car production. In January, its Central Motors subsidiary opened an new assembly plant just an hour's drive away from Sendai. That plant, with a capacity of 120,000 vehicles, makes the Yaris small car for export to the United States.

Toyota's Kanto Auto Works has another assembly plant in the neighboring prefecture of Iwate. That plant also makes small cars, including the Yaris sedan, the Scion xB and Scion xD for export. The Toyota parent company has two parts plants in the region as well.
"As for production from here out, we will make a decision after we get a handle on the situation," Corbett said, about when the northern plants would reopen.

Toyota plants near the company's headquarters in Toyota City, in central Japan, had resumed production as normal after brief shutdowns, Corbett said. There were no reports of injuries from those factories. Possible damage was still being assessed.

Toyota was also confirming damage at its suppliers. Toyota Boshoku Corp. and Denso Corp., two of Toyota's biggest parts makers, both reportedly suffered some plant damage.

Honda shut down two assembly plants immediately after the temblor, spokesman Keitaro Yamamoto said. Honda's Suzuka plant in central Japan soon resumed production.

But the company's Sayama plant, north of Tokyo and closer to the epicenter, remained shut down by late Friday evening. Yamamoto said Honda headquarters was having difficulty contacting its plants. The Sayama plant makes several U.S.-bound models.

t sends the Fit small car, the Accord sedan and the CR-V crossover to the United States, as well as the Acura RL and Acura TSX, Yamamoto said.

The company was unsure when production would resume. But Honda would close its r&d center and the Sayama and Suzuka factories at least through Monday, Yamamoto said.

At Honda's r&d center in Tochigi prefecture, one person died and 30 were injured when the quake toppled a wall at the facility's cafeteria. No other injuries were reported.

Nissan Motor Co. also suspended operations at factories throughout eastern Japan. Small fires broke out at two assembly plants, including the factory producing the Infiniti M sedan and GT-R sports car. They were quickly extinguished, the company said.

2011 BMW Alpina B7

The new Alpina B7 is a mild-mannered BMW 750i with a supercar hiding underneath. Alpina dresses up the exterior by adding 21-inch custom rims, aggressive side skirts and a rear deck spoiler. Inside are mild updates such as a fat, leather steering wheel to complement the already top-notch interior. The turbocharged V8 engine is massaged so that it generates 500 horsepower. Still, it is relatively quiet, even when I jumped on the throttle, and it delivers a constant surge in power when accelerating. I achieved a decent 17 mpg in mixed driving, and it takes a lot of gas to move this 2-ton-plus BMW. Unfortunately, the B7 costs a pretty penny at around $120K in the rare Alpina form, so only a few lucky individuals will be able to take one home. –Joe Chulick
Alpina has been tuning BMWs since the 1960s. For 2011, it takes BMW's flagship 7-Series sedan and adds legendary Alpina performance, handling and appearance upgrades. The aerodynamic body kit is subtle but purposeful, with an aggressive front spoiler, a modest rear spoiler and Alpina's signature 20-spoke wheels. Alpina boosts BMW's twin-turbocharged V8 engine to 500 horsepower that has a wide torque band. As one might imagine, the B7 is really quick, and accelerates effortlessly from any speed. The Alpina sport suspension, with its dynamic damping control, adds razor-sharp reflexes, turning this big sedan into a nimble, quick sport sedan that feels a fraction of its size whether on city streets or twisty back roads. Inside, the upgrades continue with hand-stitched Lavalina leather everywhere, blue illuminated door sills, a Switchtronic heated steering wheel in hand-stitched leather, and piano-black trim with subtle metallic inlays. –Mike Meredith
If you like BMW's flagship 7-Series but are looking for something a little flashier, the Alpina B7 is the car for you. To make outsiders know you bought something special, Alpina added an aero kit, quad exhaust pipes and special 21-inch wheels. All this could look tacky on such a large sedan, but it really works on the 7-Series. But more importantly, there's power to back up the sporty styling. The 500-horsepower twin-turbo V8 engine not only sounds great, it really gets this big car moving quickly and smoothly. All-wheel drive and upgraded suspension make the already-agile 7-Series handle even better. However, there's a price for exclusivity: The Alpina B7 starts at around $120K, about $30K more than a 750Li xDrive.

Hyundai Tucson Road Test

Hyundai’s Tucson is an exceptionally fine compact sized SUV that is well priced, well mannered, and sure to generate interest with a more refined exterior and well-done interior. Available with either four or six cylinder engines, the Tucson is built on a sedan car platform for a svelte ride and adequate acceleration that makes this of interest to the more gentle SUV driver but not to those who like to duel the snow plow driver for first rights on winter roads.
We tested a A$30,000 model and were very impressed with the Tucson’s ability to handle both family transportation issues and its ease of driving. Of course, we would much prefer if Hyundai put the 3.5 engine in the Tucson, but than why would anyone consider their other SUV, the Santa Fe. Indeed, Hyundai knows this and is extensively redesigning the more upscale Santa Fe to help keep the separation clear between the two. The problem is going to be in the pricing where both SUVs are certain to tread on each other’s MSRP listings.

You can get the Tucson with either front or all-wheel-drive and in Base, Elite and Elite S configurations. The base comes standard with the 140 horsepower four-cylinder engine and a five speed manual transmission. We recommend you buy the slightly more expensive six cylinder powered Elite and Elite S that have a 173-hp V6 and an automatic transmission if you intend to do anything more than drive this Tucson on paved roads with light loads.

Mom’s view: Close your eyes and you feel like you are in a Toyota RAV 4. When you look at the outside it has Honda CR-V lines. In other words, the Tucson looks like a mating of the two most powerful sellers in the compact SUV field.

Nevertheless, the family lineage stops there because the pricing of the Tucson is significantly less than the Japanese brands and the warranty is significantly more. Hyundai has done a fine job of putting together this product to a price point of about A$30,000. The standard features, as usual with this company, are quite generous and include full-length side curtain airbags, front air bags, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, traction control, stability control, air conditioning, power windows and door locks, keyless entry, cruise control, heated outside mirrors, roof rack side rails, a rear intermittent wiper and a CD stereo system. Now that is a well-equipped vehicle at any price, but when you are talking about the A$30,000 range and they throw in a limited 10-year/100,000-mile warranty you are talking serious bargain.

Driving the Tucson is very sedanish. The suspension is soft, the ride compliant, and the effect is quite Toyotish. When you need to fold the rear seats down you can do so quickly and that creates a level cargo floor. You don’t even have to take the rear seat headrests off to do this. Inside, the Tucson offers nearly 23 cubic feet of cargo capacity with the rear seat up, and about 66 with the seat folded. That is quite decent and the rear hatch isn’t too difficult to reach, open, or close. The best exterior feature is the fact the Tucson does not have one of those dangerous and difficult to handle rear hatch mounted spare tires.

We did not test the four wheel drive model, but it does have an Electronic InterActive Torque Management system that routes up to 99 percent of the available power to the front wheels under ideal traction conditions for the sake of fuel economy. When the going gets rough all you need to do is relax. The system automatically sends up to 50 percent of the power to the rear wheels. If you wish, you can use the dash-mounted lock button to lock the driveline into a 50/50-split when driving in snow or heavy rain.

Overall, I would rate the Tucson as the best compact SUV value for the money, but note that we have not yet evaluated the new Kia Sportage SUV that has many similar traits to the Tucson and is priced competitively. I would tend to believe that the Hyundai’s resale might be stronger than the Sportage.

Dad’s view: Not my favorite compact SUV, the Subaru Forester is, but this is my favorite Hyundai and perhaps the best bargain in the niche. Unless you only use the Tucson for commuting stay away from the 2.0-liter, inline four-cylinder engine that even with continuously variable valve timing, only makes 140 horsepower and 136 pound-feet of torque. Order the optional 2.7-liter V6 engine that produces 173 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. I really enjoyed the larger engine in combination with the automatic transmission. It wasn’t fast, but it wasn’t a snail either. We got about 22 mpg with this combination and on regular fuel. If you are into comparison shopping I would guess that the V6 engine is comparable to the four cylinder powered units in the RAV4 and CR-V. The larger fuel tank on the V6 Tucson enables you to make 350-mile highway trips.

The main selling point, outside of the pricing, was the Tucson’s ride quality. It was quite composed even on mildly rain-gutted roads and only bottom-less potholes disturbed its nature. On the other hand, I did not like the feel of the brakes. They were too mushy feeling and you need a while to get accustomed to its slow stopping when fully loaded.

There is little doubt the Hyundai has become an acceptable manufacture in the SUV field. The Santa Fe is an exceptionally priced vehicle and the Tucson is even better. It does make you wonder if the next model is going to be named for a trendy city in Texas or California.

Young working woman’s view: Very tempting indeed is my pronouncement about the Tucson. It clearly fits with my life style, does not have that overbearing look of large SUVs, is much more environmentally friendly, and is neat and proper looking both inside and out. Very tempting just as it sits, but when you toss in that warranty on the drive train, you have a compact SUV that is going to be difficult to ignore by smart shoppers not caught up in the brand name game.

There were some need for improvement areas such as the lack of storage space in the cabin, brakes that reacted too slowly for me, and the amount of cold air seeping through the large window insulation moldings. In addition, you need to watch your head when opening the rear hatch if you are tall, and although the rear hatch window opens for easy access, it is difficult to tell when it is closed. Finally, when you ask for more out of the V6 engine it lets you know with a painful growl. Of course, I wouldn’t worry with that powertrain warranty covering me well into
my mid-30’s when my financial security would be assured by frugal purchases such as this Tucson.

The long and short of it are that the Tucson is on my short list of vehicles to seriously consider buying. I can haul what I need, get that raised seating position I like, and can enter and exit without any problems regardless of what I am wearing. My only caveat would be to wait until the government crash scores are published, but the Tucson’s big sister, the Santa Fe, fared well and I expect the Tucson to continue that family tradition.

Young college going male’s view: Not too bad, but certainly not as athletic as it could be with firmer styling and larger than 16-inch rims. Although my CD continues to sell well on Tower Records (Simple Thoughts), I still have not reached the level of financial security where a bargain priced vehicle does not draw my attention. What I most liked about the Tucson was how not like a Hyundai it looked. Gone was the guppy grill of the Santa Fe and the let’s use every thing on our French curve template side panels. The removable mat in the cargo area was said to be washable, which is a nice touch. The spare tire is where it belongs and not clinging to the reach hatch like a pimple, and the tool kit is nicely fitted into a tray.

There was a lot of first-rate, and some bad for the Tucson’s report card. The gauges were easy to read and reach. The steering wheel had a nice feel to it and it even tilted. However, the seats weren’t all that comfortable for me. They needed more lumbar padding and I was also not enamored with the reduced visibility to the sides because of the size of the rear pillars. The interior looked light and airy, but I would have preferred a darker selection due to the inevitability of dirt and stains. The interior is not that quiet and the radio reception was only adequate.
Would I buy a Tucson? Yes, and no. I like a more rigorous handling vehicle and the Tucson is not. I like pep and it isn’t here. Consequently I would say no. As for the yes part of my brain, I would say warranty, value, cargo capacity, looks, and ride height.

Family conference: The Tucson is only a few percentage points away from being a top rung vehicle. Unfortunately, bringing those few demerits up to snuff would require more money added to the bottom line. This Hyundai rests in the good enough column with the Honda CR-V, and the Toyota RAV4 and a notch below the segment leading Subaru Forester. Regardless, we could have never imagined a Hyundai being so successful with SUVs this rapidly when their sedans have struggled so long. Drive it and the Kia Sportage, which is a little sportier, obviously.

BMW 530d vs Mercedes E280 CDI

Take for example the Mercedes E280 CDI and the BMW 530d. It isn't as classy looking as the Mercedes, and while the Mercedes screams expensive, the BMW looks a little sportier. The wheels on the BMW are 1" bigger than the Mercedes (17"), and the Mercedes has front and rear fog lights while the BMW only has front fog lights. The BMW has some features that the Mercedes does not have. The Mercedes also has ESP. The BMW really has better shifting for a sports car.
Details
Despite the past models having nearly duplicate features on the inside, the E280 and 530d have very different interior features. While the BMW keeps it simple while adding hints of luxury with additions such as the dark wood design, the Mercedes has quite a few different gadgets and the typical wood grain design that exudes luxury. Both are fantastic options, it is just up to what the buyer is looking for. If you want something that has a feel of traditional luxury, then go for the Mercedes-it tends to be the choice of older people. In contrast, the BMW is not as traditional, and younger people often find it more appealing due to the relaxing interior inside and the technological advances that are not featured in the E280. Sitting down in both cars is pleasant. Both have electric driver's seats, although they did not have a memory feature, which was surprising.
The BMW actually has an electric front passenger seat as well, while the Mercedes does not. Both vehicles are also equipped with a driver's assistance program. In the Mercedes this system is called COMAND, and though it is efficient, it requires the driver to pay more attention to the screen, which can be dangerous while driving. While it does offer the capability to play DVDs or watch TV, it is not very user-friendly, and to change through menus, the driver has to push buttons that are in the area of the speedometer, which makes you have to continually look away from the road to change between menus. The 530d, on the other hand, has the ever popular i-Drive program, which can control many different aspects of driving without the driver having to pay hardly any attention to the system, making it a safer option to use for sure. Some people have reported problems with this i-Drive system, but like anything else, if you give it some time and really practice with using it, you will become more proficient in using it and find that it is a very valuable component to have in your vehicle, especially since it can also play DVDs!
For as long as I can remember, BMW and Mercedes have been in competition in the luxury car market, and things have not changed at all. They always attempt to keep ahead, or at least even with the other. If BMW comes out with a specific feature on a newly released vehicle and Mercedes does not already put that feature in their vehicles, then you will most likely be able to find it as a standard feature the next time Mercedes releases a new car. That is just the way that they work with one another. For this reason, there is not much difference in the interior features offered by the two manufacturers. However, this is not the case when it comes to driving capabilities. Take for example the Mercedes E280 CDI and the BMW 530d. Both of these vehicles are classified in the luxury sedan area, but both of them could use some updating in the aesthetics department if they want to continue competing with the other contenders. Even then, they both have elegant styling, which has come to be expected from both Mercedes and BMW. Like the interior of the BMW, which I will discuss below, the exterior is a little more daring in design, making it more appealing to certain people and less appealing to others. It isn't as classy looking as the Mercedes, and while the Mercedes screams expensive, the BMW looks a little sportier. Just looking at it lets you know that it means business when it comes to driving. The Mercedes, on the other hand, is obviously designed to exude luxury. Though it does have options for sportier features, the overall look is one of prestige.
In reference to the satellite navigation systems that are available in both vehicles, the BMW definitely takes the prize. Both of the systems are practical and efficient, but the amount of time that the Mercedes took to figure out a way to get somewhere was absolutely ridiculous. If you are trying to figure out directions while driving the vehicle, not only will you be driving dangerously because of having to look at the screen, you will almost be there by the time it finally gives you directions. For this reason, the BMW system is better. Even then, it is not that special, which makes the Mercedes system even less special. The BMW Heads Up display system enables drivers to see information on the screen without diverting their attention from the road. They can find out directions as well as general speed information by using this system. No matter which car you get into first, you will not be disappointed. The seats are sturdy and comfortable and there are plenty of nice things to look at. As I stated in this paragraph, the BMW is a little more modern, which would obviously draw the attention of younger buyers and drivers, but that is not to say that an older person would not come in and fall in love with the BMW! It is just really up to the preference of the person sitting in the car.
Some of the standard features that are included in the vehicles are very similar, such as cruise control, electric windows and locks, front and rear parking sensors, automatic climate control, and leather upholstery and steering wheels. The wheels on the BMW are 1" bigger than the Mercedes (17"), and the Mercedes has front and rear fog lights while the BMW only has front fog lights. Other features that the Mercedes that are different are the halogen headlights, the auto dimming rear view and driver side mirrors, and a 6 disc CD player. The BMW has some features that the Mercedes does not have. One of the things it has that is the most different is the Datadot technology, which I reviewed in another vehicle. Datadots are distributed over a vehicle and are the size of a grain of sand, containing pertinent information about the car so that if it is stolen and chopped up for parts, the parts can be linked back to the vehicle. Hopefully the car will be in one piece-if that is the case, it can simply be searched in the database if it has Datadot technology. The BMW also has Bluetooth phone capability, which is another near feature. Like the Mercedes, it has a 6 disc CD player, but it also has a single disc CD player in the center. The safety features on the vehicle are almost identical. They both have multiple airbags for both the driver and front and back seat passengers, Brake Assist, the Anti Lock Brake System brakes, and Electronic Brake Distribution. The Mercedes also has ESP. The BMW, on the other hand, does not have ESP, but does have Dynamic Stability Control.
If you are trying to pick a car that will take you on a road trip with a car full of passengers, then your best bet is probably the BMW 530d. It has a mass amount of space for rear passengers, leaving enough room for them to go on a long road trip! In addition to the wonderful space, both cars have an unbelievable fuel efficiency, which makes them both viable options for a road trip. No matter what the circumstances, you will be averaged around 7.5L/100KM to 8L/100KM, which means a lot less trips to the gas station and a lot less money spent on gas!

The engines are almost identical-both 3.0 Liter, turbo Diesel engines. The Mercedes is a V6 with a 7-speed gearbox and the BMW is a 6-cylinder with a 6-speed gearbox. In this particular comparison, the BMW does exert more power than the Mercedes, which perhaps has something to do with why the car is designed in such a manner as it is! The BMW also has more get up and go than the Mercedes, not only because of the slightly stronger engine, but also because the Mercedes actually weighs more than the BMW. Even with all of the driving power that the BMW has, the Mercedes has the advantage when it comes to smoothness in the shifting department. This is surprising considering the BMW has been recognized for its shifting. In this situation, that just doesn't matter. The Mercedes is better at smooth shifting, but that almost is not what you want in a sports car.

The BMW really has better shifting for a sports car. There are some programs that are part of the vehicles that change the way that they drive significantly. Unfortunately, the steering on the Mercedes is not one of the strong points. If you use the parameter steering assistance, you will most likely end up getting frustrating with the lack of real steering that you get to do-it almost does too much for the driver. Even so, some people like that feature. My preference is the BMW in this steering aspect, though, if you don't consider the bulky steering wheel that is very out of place in such a sporty vehicle. Nevertheless, the BMW's steering handles better than the Mercedes on different types of roads, making it the hands down champion in the steering department. You might still see some oversteering problems, but that is nothing compared to the lack of steering that the Mercedes has. Luckily, the
Mercedes redeems itself when it comes to slamming on the brakes. Both cars perform equally when the brakes are applied at full force. One of the nice things about the BMW for other drivers is that it has an additional brake light on the back of the vehicle so that sudden stops will not automatically cause auto accidents.

Unfortunately, it is not just that easy to pick between the two. You might pick the BMW, but when you find out it is almost $15,000 more expensive than the Mercedes at a whopping $115,000, you might opt for the Mercedes. In all honesty, it is hard to say which one actually surpasses the other in ability. Each has its own strong and weak points, and it ends up being up to the person who is going to be driving it. The styles of the two are very different. If you are looking for a more luxurious car that works for sporty driving fairly well too, then you can go for the Mercedes and save about $15,000. You still have to be able to cough up $100,000 though, which is a pretty penny. If you would rather have a trendier car that is keeping up with the day's technologies, then you might want to go for the BMW, but keep in mind you have to fork out a significant amount more money. The BMW has a lot of power and the ability to be upgraded for not that much in cost, while the Mercedes could be upgraded but it did cost quite a little bit to do so. All in all, if you are in the market for a sportier luxury vehicle, test drive both cars, do your research, and decide if one of these two is right for you!
