2012 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback - Auto Shows
Wednesday, 2 March 2011
At last fall’s Paris auto show, Chevrolet showed a five-door “concept” version of its new Cruze small car. Really, the only conceptual elements were minor things like blue-bordered headlights, LED accent strips, and blue-anodized brake calipers. It was clear the car was headed for production, and now the Cruze hatchback you’ll be able to buy (well, maybe not you, but other people; see below) is making its debut at the 2011 Geneva auto show.
To no one’s surprise, the five-door looks exactly like a Cruze sedan with a rounded-off rear. Like the concept, this car still reminds us of the Subaru Impreza hatch, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. (Unless you’re a Porsche.)

It’s probably safe to assume you’re reading this story because you love hatches as much as we do, but if you want this car, we hope you’re on the right side of the Atlantic. The Cruze hatch will be sold only in the five-door-friendly European market, starting this summer.
It will be offered with a standard six-speed manual transmission and a range of engine options that includes a top-spec 161-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel borrowed from the new Chevy Orlando, a small five-door MPV we don’t get. It’s unlikely GM will reverse course and bring this Cruze variant here, but if you want a similarly sized five-door from a domestic company, Ford is certainly willing to sell you a Focus.
